Saginaw Sting Player Spotlight Damon Dowdell - QB #7

03.03.09 - story by Ben Murphy

Damon Dowdell was the one that almost got away, but Saginaw Sting fans can rest easy knowing that he will be back as their signal caller in 2009.

Dowdell, who threw for 54 touchdowns last year for the Sting in the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) signed on to play with the Peoria Pirates of the Arena Football League 2 in the off-season. However, before he broke camp with the Pirates, circumstances lead to his return to the Sting.

“It just wasn't a good time to leave,” Dowdell said.

Now that he is back, Dowdell has his sights set on taking the Indoor Football League (IFL) by storm.
“I would like to win another championship,” he said. “And maybe another opportunity to prove myself to some bigger teams so when they do (Arena Football League) start back up I can have my opportunity to go to the next level.”

Dowdell still can't get over the feeling of last year's victory in the CIFL Championship game.
“It was  very special moment for me in my starting season to win the championship,” he said. “It was a lot of hard work.”

Dowdell, who played for Detroit Henry Ford in high school, moved on to Michigan State University, where he threw for four touchdowns his senior season. After graduating from MSU, Dowdell played for the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League in 2005. He sat out the 2006 season, before signing with the Port Huron Pirates of the CIFL midway through the 2007 season.

“The indoor game is a lot quicker,” he said about his move from the college game to the indoor leagues. “It's a lot quicker than you would think. “It most definitely (made me a better quarterback.)”
Despite having a cannon for an arm, Dowdell claims to be an average guy otherwise, who hopes to break into a career in corporate security or go to graduate school after his playing career is over.

“I'm just like a regular guy,” he said. “I love to play basketball, I play Madden in my spare time and I love to eat.”

Eating and games of Madden aside, Dowdell hopes 2009 is another great season for the Sting.

“I'm looking forward to the season,” he said. “Hopefully we can bring another championship back to Saginaw.”
